Director of SWIIS

María Angustias Caracuel Raya holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from Complutense University (Madrid), a Master degree from El Salvador University (Argentina) and a Bachelor´s degree in Political Science. She earned several Diplomas at NATO School in Oberammergau and graduated from the European Security and Defence College (ESDC) and the Inter-American Defence College in Washington, D.C. She has also participated in the Erasmus Program at Newcastle Upon Tyne’s University (United Kingdom) and the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) of the US Department of State.

Currently, she works at the Counsellor Area of the Cabinet of the General Secretariat for Defence Policy (Ministry of Defence) and is the founder of the Association of Spanish Graduates in Security and Defence Issues (ADESyD) and Spanish Women in International Security (SWIIS), created under its auspices. She was appointed by an absolute majority of the Senate as a member of the Observatory of Military Life, which is ascribed to the Parliament.

She is the author of “Changes in NATO after the end of the Cold War”, with a foreword by Mr. Javier Solana (2 editions), and has published many articles on Euro-Atlantic and Mediterranean security, hemispheric security and UNSCR 1325. She is also the editor of ADESyD’s newsletter and other documents, available at   www.adesyd.es

7 June 2017: Spanish Women in International Security-SWIIS and the Association of Spanish Graduates in Security and Defense (ADESyD) host a presentation of the third academic congress book discussing current security threats in Spain. More information on the event can be found here

29 November 2016: SWIIS will participate at the III ADESyD Congress on “Sharing views on Security”. The former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Josep Piqué will give the inaugural speech and the Spanish Congress of Deputies Defense Committee President, Mr. José María Barreda, will give the final one. 18 November 2016: SWIIS will participate as invited Association to join the UN Women Committee simulation (COMPIMUN 2016) organized by the Complutense University International Model UN students members (Faculty of Political Sciences-Complutense University of Madrid) and to give the final speech at the closing ceremony.

8 November 2016: SWIIS was invited by NATO Public Diplomacy Division to join with others Spanish women organizations the workshop “Women Think Tankers & Communicators” in order to analyze the Warsaw Summit main conclusions and the NATO women, peace, and security agenda. Our Coordinator, Dr. Ana Belén Perianes participated at this workshop.

 

picture118 October 2016: SWIIS was invited by the NATO Women to participate as a member of the New Civil Society Advisory Panel on Women, Peace, and Security.

Our Director, Dr. Marian Caracuel Raya participated at the first NATO Women New Civil Society Advisory Panel on Women, Peace, and Security. The Civil Society Advisory Panel will meet each year and engage on an ongoing. Please find more information here.

June 2016: SWIIS supports the campaign She for Secretary General @She4SG as an Ally. We have joined the campaign @She4SG to elect a woman as the 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations in a global effort for gender equality. Find more information here. 

7 June 2016: Presentation of the II ADESyD Congress Book at the Center for Higher Defense Studies (CESEDEN).

The Spanish Ombudsman, Ms. Soledad Becerril gave the inaugural speech and the former Spokesperson of the Defense Committee of the Spanish Congress of Deputies, Mr. Diego López Garrido, gave the final one. Find more information here.

24 May 2016: Visited NATO Brussels Headquarters.

A delegation of the Spanish Graduates in Security and Defense Association (ADESyD) was invited by the NATO Public Diplomacy Division for joining a Workshop Day in the NATO Brussels Headquarters.The 24th May 2016. Brussels. Find more information here.

4 May 2016: Participation in the Workshop “II National Action Plan on Women, Peace, and Security”. Diplomatic School of the Spanish Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Madrid. We are collaborating with other Spanish women associations involved in women, peace and security issues in the II National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security elaboration. March 2016: Election of the new Spanish Graduates in Security and Defense Association (ADESyD) Steering Board. The President (and SWIIS Director), Marian Caracuel Ph.D., has been elected for four years.

The members of the Steering Board have been elected for two years (between them, Ana Belén Perianes Ph.D., the just elected Spanish Women in International Security Coordinator).

29 October 2015: Organization to the event “The role of Spanish Women in Peacekeeping Operations”, EU´s headquarters, Madrid.

On the occasion of the 15th Anniversary of UNSCR1325 and the Spanish Presidency of the Security Council, SWIIS organized an academic event, which consisted of two Round Table discussions, and a Photo Exhibition. Thanks to the support of the European Union External Action Service and the European Council, the booklet “Women for Women” and their role in Common Security and Defence Policy, CSDP´s missions was translated into SpanishFind more information here.

6-9 July 2015: IV Summer Course on “40 years of democratic transition in Spain”, Madrid. Alexandra Issacovitch  gave a presentation on “The influence on gender issues”.
