SUMMARY:Where is the Caribbean in the Dutch WPS National Action Plan?
DESCRIPTION:Women in International Security Netherlands (WIIS NL) is pleased to invite you to our event on Thursday the 25th of May focusing on the Dutch Caribbean! \nWhere is the Caribbean in the Dutch WPS National Action Plan?\nThe Dutch Caribbean\, which include the diverse islands of Aruba\, Curacao\, Sint Maarten\, Bonaire\, Saba\, and Sint Eustatius\, faces a unique set of challenges when it comes to gender and human security. Many of the human security issued faced on the islands have an important gender component: personal security in the barrios; sex-trafficking; prostitution; crime and policing; drug trafficking; climate-change threats to livelihoods; disaster response in the leeward islands which experience hurricanes; economic and social security and access to higher education. \nDespite the Netherlands’ commitment to the WPS agenda\, which includes the publication of four national action plans\, the needs of women in the Dutch Caribbean remain largely invisible in public debate and policy initiatives. Indeed\, existing security initiatives for the region are usually gender-blind. \nTogether with Samira Rafaela (Member of European Parliament\, D66) and Dr. Paula Kibbelaar (Instituto Pedagogico Arubano)\, we aim to shed some much needed light on the gendered insecurities faced in the Dutch Caribbean. How can local solutions to local problems not only be found\, but also supported through e.g. the National Action Plans?

DESCRIPTION:Join Women In International Security (WIIS) and the Embassy of Liechtenstein on May 17\, 2023\, at 11:00 AM (EDT) for a virtual discussion on how arms control\, nonproliferation\, and disarmament efforts must identify and address the harmful impact of weapons on women and girls. \nThis event brings together experts on gender and nuclear weapons\, chemical and biological weapons\, and small arms and light weapons to find new ways of acknowledging gendered impact in arms control and disarmament debates. SUMMARY:Celebrating the Life & Legacy of WIIS' Founder\, Dr. Catherine Kelleher
DESCRIPTION:Women In International Security (WIIS) invites you to join us to celebrate the life and legacy of our founder\, Dr. Catherine Kelleher. \n\n\nCatherine passed away in February 2023. Catherine was a champion for gender equality. Catherine was prompted to found WIIS through her own experiences as a woman in the field of international security\, especially arms control. A friend and mentor to many\, her legacy is the generations of young and talented women working in national and international security. Catherine had to forge a path forward in a field where few women could make a career. Her children survive Catherine\, Michael Kelleher (Dayna Kalleres) and Diane Kelleher (David Attis)\, and four grandchildren.
