  • Today is #InternationalWomensDay! 💐🧡 International Women's Day is a day for celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and efforts towards advancing gender equality. However, it is also a day to look critically at the progress made, highlighting where progress is slow and change is needed. For this year's #IWD, the United Nations has chosen the theme 'Accelerate Action'. 📈 #AccelerateAction acknowledges the strategies, resources, and activities positively contributing to women's advancement, and sheds light on the barriers to gender equality that remain at the international, national, and local levels. What does this mean for the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda? Twenty-five years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325, what continues to hinder the effective implementation and progress towards global gender equality in peace and conflict? • We were honored to host a delegation from the Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP) on February 7th for the second edition of their Shadow Program. This inspiring group of civil society leaders from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova, working on gender, youth, marginalized communities, and peace and security, joined us for a lively discussions on how we can advance the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. 🕊️ We covered how Dutch politicians and local leaders are tackling gender-based violence, the important work of the Safe You app in protecting women, and celebrated the groundbreaking milestone in Moldova, which formally recognized femicide, a pivotal step that could guide future Dutch legislation. Most importantly, we delved into ways we can support each other to ensure women everywhere have both the protection and the platform to engage in peace processes. We’re grateful to our experts, intelligence and security services specialist Willemijn Aerdts and engagement officer Lucia Anna Demény, for sharing their academic insights and policy experiences. It was invigorating to learn from everyone present, including colleagues from the Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR), Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly-Vanadzor, and more. We look forward to carrying these insights forward in our continued work. A heartfelt thank-you to Jasmin Nario Galace, Vonda Wolcott, Murad Aghazada, Irina Lencautan-Rusu, Nazeli Movsesyan, and Natia Kostava for joining us in The Hague! #WIISNL #WPS #WPSAgenda

  • 🗳️📝 This week, voters across the European Union will head to the polls for the European Parliament elections. The Netherlands will vote on Thursday 6th June. The European Parliament adopts EU laws on a range of issues, such as the environment, migration, security, social policies, and the rule of law. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), elected by citizens of EU member states, represent their countries in this legislative process, and also have an influence on the election of the European Commission. In the run-up to the elections, WIIS Netherlands spoke with some parties about their views on several topics close to the work of WIIS. Today, we share the insights of Naomi Yogi-van Loon, candidate 4 for NSC-EU, on #WomenPeaceandSecurity in the EU, young people's participation in decision-making processes, and the gendered dynamics of climate change. On Monday April 22 at 10am ET / 4pm CET / 8:30pm IST, SGP Breaking Gender and Sex Binaries Circle is happy to bring back Jamie J. Hagen for a follow up to the February 2024 circle discussion around #Queering the Women, Peace, & Security Agenda. In the year 2000 the UN passed Security Council Resolution (UNCSCR 1325), the first UN Security Council resolution to draw attention to women and girls during conflict, as well as the first to consider gendered experiences of war. Yet those vulnerable to insecurity and violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity remain largely neglected by the international peace and security community. While much has been accomplished to include a gender analysis of conflict in recent years, there is an alarming lack of attention to how homophobic and transphobic violence targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) individuals occurs in conflict. The discussion will focus on practical proposals to respond to these silences as outlined in the 'Queering Women, Peace and Security: A practice-based toolkit' (co-authored by Jamie) for including sexual orientation and gender identity in peace and security work. ⭕ Register as a Circle member to participate: https://lnkd.in/emV5dZ_G 📔 Download the toolkit: https://lnkd.in/gfgfGMsd 💥 Join the Society of Gender Professionals to access a range of career programming & networking opportunities: https://lnkd.in/gfSaBu9M #BreakingBinaries #GenderJustice
