The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) is looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Research Fellow to support research and policy analysis in the run-up to the 25th Anniversary of UNSCR 1325. Reporting to the Director of Research, the WPS Researcher will work closely with teams across the Institute on research activities aimed at strengthening WPS implementation. Activities will include overseeing a global survey of women peacebuilders, monitoring progress toward WPS commitments by UN Member States, and supporting a series of white papers on key WPS themes. In collaboration with the Policy and Programs Team, the WPS Researcher will help to identify and inform timely opportunities for policy advocacy and work to develop evidence-based policy recommendations. The WPS Researcher will also represent the Institute at external stakeholder engagements and support the Institute’s global workshop series on a variety of WPS issues as needed.
The ideal candidate will have broad substantive expertise on Women, Peace, and Security and significant project management experience. The ability to produce policy-oriented analysis and to write for a policy audience is essential. Candidates with quantitative, survey, and mixed methods research training are particularly encouraged to apply.
GIWPS is a fast-paced research institution. The WPS Researcher must be organized, manage time efficiently, meet multiple deadlines, and produce work on a tight turnaround. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who can work well independently and as part of a small team.
Duties and responsibilities of the Research Fellow include, but are not limited to:
Supervise a Global Survey of Women Peacebuilders
- Oversee survey development, piloting, and administration.
- Support survey outreach, with a goal of reaching at least 3,000 respondents.
- Lead on analysis of survey data.
- Support focus group discussions on survey findings with women peacebuilders in a variety of countries.
- Supervise and contribute to the final research report.
Monitor progress toward WPS Commitments by UN Member States
- Lead WPS commitment monitoring and reporting using an established framework of nine indicators.
- Conduct key informant interviews with UN Member State representatives to identify best practices for WPS National Action Plan implementation.
- Serve as lead author on culminating research report.
- Provide briefings to UN Member States on research findings.
Inform Policy and Practice
- Work with the Director of Research to identify critical gaps in knowledge and opportunities to strengthen WPS implementation.
- Produce policy briefs, op-eds, blogs, and other publications in the run-up to the 25th Anniversary of UNSCR 1325.
- Support global workshops with women peacebuilders aimed at identifying WPS priorities and calls to action across a variety of WPS themes.
- Collaborate with the Communications Team on strategic communications to amplify GIWPS WPS research activities in academic, policy, and practitioner communities.
- Represent the Institute in key stakeholder convenings and briefings of policymakers on specific policy-relevant insights generated through assigned research activities.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree (Ph.D. preferred) in political science, international relations, international development, gender studies, peacebuilding, conflict resolution, anthropology, sociology or related field.
- 3 years of relevant professional experience, including significant project management experience.
- Proven track record of conducting and communicating policy-relevant research.
- Demonstrated ability to write persuasively for a policy audience.
- Substantive expertise related to Women, Peace and Security issues.
- Quantitative, survey, and mixed methods research training desirable.
- Previous experience supervising junior colleagues and/or students is desirable.
- Ability to conduct a gender analysis is desirable.

The preferred start date is October 15, 2024. Candidates will be considered on a rolling basis until the position is filled. The successful applicant will be hired as a Georgetown University Research Fellow, which is a full-time non-tenure line faculty position with benefits. The initial contract will be for one year, with guaranteed funding for a second year, depending on performance. Future years are subject to available resources.
The projected salary pay range for this position is $75,000 – $85,000, which represents the full range of anticipated compensation for this position. Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
