Cuso International’s strategy for work in Indigenous communities in Canada is driven by the knowledge that was shared with us over the course of our community visits. It centers on reconciliation, mental health, strengthening social inclusion and gender equality, economic resilience through sustainable development and advancing climate action. We aim to support the important work that Nations and communities are already doing, empowering Indigenous youth, strengthening community connections, promoting cultural sensitivity and trauma-informed practices, and supporting Indigenous volunteerism. A key piece of implementing such important work is the work that has to be done internally within Cuso, changing systems, removing barriers and ensuring that Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing are woven throughout the fabric of the organization.
