The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) is a defence and security think tank that has a deep understanding of regional geopolitics and geo-economics in a global context. Its international researchers provide best-in-class independent and impartial analysis and provide insights on strategic challenges and priorities to governments and the private sector. It is expert at bringing together national leaders and senior policymakers in foreign policy, defence and security; promoting dialogue; and facilitating effective and influential bilateral and multilateral consultations.
The IISS is seeking to appoint a Senior Fellow for Space, reporting to the Head of the Defence and Military Analysis Programme (DMAP) and the Director for Defence and Technology, and working closely with the Head of the Strategy, Technology and Arms Control (STAC) Programme.
The successful candidate will be a dynamic, highly qualified, senior specialist on regional space policy and technology issues with a strong record in policy-relevant research and fundraising. The principal delivery will be a two-year research project focused on best practices and behaviours for military, civil and commercial users of space.
Areas of research specialisation can include: best practices and behaviours for users of space; national and multilateral space-related policy and technology developments; space launch; space security threats including counterspace capabilities; space situational awareness concerns; developments in the military and civilian use of space; and the deepening role of the private sector in space activities.
In addition to delivering the specific research project and leading and developing IISS work in these areas, the candidate will conduct leading-edge research and publish widely as part of our DMAP and STAC research programmes, and support events by these programmes and other IISS research programmes and regional offices.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate IISS research activity on space issues, including fundraising, to produce original, authoritative and data-driven research and written and graphical output in your area of specialisation for IISS outlets throughout the year.
- Deliver briefings and consultancy reports for IISS clients; contributions to other fundraising activities.
- Work with IISS colleagues on maintaining and improving relevant aspects of IISS data holdings.
Requirements
- Possess a strong background in space policy and/or technology in government and/or the private sector.
- Professional writing skills.
- Ease with international travel.
- Background in policy-relevant research is desirable.
Remuneration
Salary will be competitive and commensurate with knowledge and skills. The IISS provides a full employment package.
