Press Release – 17 August 2021

Women In International Security is deeply concerned about the situation in Afghanistan and strongly condemns the targeted acts of violence and the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding across Afghanistan. The Taliban’s campaign of violence has created an immediate security threat to nearly 20 million women and girls, as well as male allies who have supported their advancement over the last 20 years.

We call for the immediate evacuation of threatened Afghan activists, including the establishment of special parole programs for at-risk Afghan women human rights defenders and intensified efforts to manage refugee processing and relocations.

WIIS continues to monitor the rapidly evolving situation and support Afghan advocates for women’s rights and gender equality.
