The Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP) is seeking a well-organized, results-focused, events and membership manager. The successful candidate will have strong organization, liaison and customer service skills, and a knack for smoothly coordinating small and large events and conferences.  

AfP is a Washington, DC based not-for-profit, nonpartisan membership network of over 220 organizations that has experienced substantial growth in recent years. It is the institutional home for the peacebuilding community and operates through three technical capacities to build the peacebuilding field: (1) Partnerships & Convening, (2) Learning & Evidence, and (3) Policy & Advocacy. AfP also serves as a platform for peacebuilders from around the world to connect, amplify their voices, and build new models of social action for peace. With a core staff of 10 people, AfP carries out its fieldbuilding efforts with a current annual budget of $1.6+ million across the three technical capacities. Additionally, AfP hosts an annual conference, PeaceCon, that is attended by 1500+ people and serves as AfP’s largest annual fundraiser. AfP is recognized for its thought leadership in peacebuilding advocacy, learning, and convening. It was awarded the 2018 Luxembourg Peace Prize in the category of Outstanding Peace Support, named the “number one influencer and change agent” among peacebuilding institutions worldwide in 2019, and awarded the 14th annual Warren Knight Distinguished Service Award by the JAMS Foundation for our global efforts to achieve sustainable peace.

AfP’s recent strategic review process highlights its critical role in building and advancing the peacebuilding field, including through allies and partners, to achieve greater impact in reducing and preventing violent conflict and fragility and building sustainable peace.

Role summary

Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, the Events and Membership manager (EMM) is the lead event manager of AfP’s flagship annual conference, PeaceCon. The EMM will additionally collaborate with AfP’s small team to execute smaller events throughout the year for the benefit of members and key players in the peacebuilding and conflict prevention space.  The EMM will supervise a temporary conference associate engaged to assist with execution of the event.

In addition, the incumbent will work closely with the senior management team to manage AfP’s large and growing institutional membership of peacebuilding global organizations including managing member databases and membership communications. Together with the AfP senior leadership team, the EMM will follow up on referrals for new members and help engage with and onboard new members.

Finally, as we are a small team, the EMM’s duties will include some office administration functions (<10%).

Events Management (50%).


AfP’s PeaceCon is the largest annual peacebuilding conference in the U.S., working to expand professional networks, develop shared learning, and amplify our members’ work within the peacebuilding field and with donors and policymakers. The EMM oversees the management of PeaceCon and the team members assigned to this event, including the part-time conference associate.

  • Develops event schedule in partnership with senior leadership team and manages event logistics and budgets for PeaceCon.
  • Supports the senior leadership team in sponsorship tracking and communication.
  • Oversees the Request for Proposal and proposal review process for presentations from diverse organizations and individuals in the peacebuilding and conflict prevention space.
  • Coordinates team responsibilities for PeaceCon, including speaker engagement and tracking, communications, tickets sales and advertising, venue and partner liaising, and vendor agreements.

Small events management

AfP hosts several smaller scale activities per month, including working group meetings, roundtables, and smaller conferences on topics of interest to the peacebuilding and conflict prevention community. These are often held at AfP’s office in Dupont Circle or convened jointly with AfP members.

  • With the Deputy Executive Director, maintain an events calendar and forecast resource needs and scheduling well in advance.
  • Partner with colleagues from the Advocacy and Research teams to execute these events, including venue, catering, participation, communications, and follow up.
  • Depending on the interest and motivation of the selected candidate, the EMM may play a role in agenda development, as well as identification and outreach to potential speakers.

Membership Responsibilities (40%):

The EMM is responsible for managing AfP’s 220+ organizational members.

  • Manage the organization’s database of contacts in our membership software, JoinIt.
  • Coordinate the onboarding of new members.
  • Lead communication, outreach, and membership annual renewals via phone, email, and mailing projects to all members.
  • In partnership with the senior leadership team, follow up on referrals and inquiries from potential new members.

General administration (<10%):

  • Receive, review, and dispatch office mail.
  • Maintain office inventory – IT equipment, communications equipment, office furnishings etc.
  • Provide periodic meeting support to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors (i.e., agenda, meeting minutes)
  • Liaises with finance manager and HR advisor to arrange staff onboarding/offboarding, attend to benefits, and assist with the payment of routine bills and invoices.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in any discipline
  • 3 years’ professional experience in an operations or administrative role in a corporate or non-profit; proven project management expertise.
  • 1 year of experience in events management
  • Demonstrated interest in peacebuilding and conflict prevention.

Additional Requirements:

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, keen attention to detail, and customer-service orientation.
  • Ability to work independently, use initiative and solve problems to deliver results.
  • Strong team skills: ability to deliver on commitments to others and be accountable and dependable.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, and positive, can-do attitude. Full working proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and Word; at ease with different platforms and technologies. Experience with Squarespace valued.
    • Previous successful supervisory experience a plus.


Job Location

The position is based in Washington, DC (walking distance to Dupont Circle Metro); occasional telework authorized depending on the needs of the organization. The successful candidate should be based in the DMV area.

Salary Range

55,000 to 65,000 U.S. Dollars, plus employer matched 403(b) retirement fund, health, dental, and vision insurance, and commuter benefits.
