WIIS Book Talk: Leadership in War and Peace: Masculine and Feminine

WIIS Research Director Dr. Karin Johnston sits down with WIIS senior fellow Dr. Joan Johnson-Freese to discuss Joan’s new book, Leadership in War and Peace: Masculine and Feminine. The book shines a light on a dimension of leadership critical to success but not often debated: leadership and the different ways women and men manifest it. The book argues that effective leadership is all about results – and effective leaders apply different leadership styles, including using both male and female lenses, in the right measure, with the right people, at the right time–using a variety of leadership characteristics to meet the moment. Watch as Karin and Joan discuss the importance of the book’s message in this political environment and its timely relevance to the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. (This discussion was pre-recorded on June 10th, 2025).
